Rental scams are one of the most common fraud schemes in Nigeria. Following the golden rules below will protect you in the vast majority of cases. It takes five minutes to read — it could save you hundreds of thousands of naira.

Golden Rules

Never pay for a property you have not physically inspected. Photos can be stolen or AI-generated; only an in-person visit confirms the property is real and available.
Never pay "viewing fees" or "commitment fees" to unverified agents. Legitimate agents earn from successful transactions, not from showing up.
Always confirm the agent's identity — ask for their RentHub profile, a valid ID, and their office address. Verified agents display a badge on our platform.
Meet in safe conditions: daylight hours, public or occupied locations, and ideally with a friend or family member accompanying you.
Insist on a written tenancy agreement signed by both parties, with clearly stated rent, duration, service charges, and refund terms — before any money changes hands.
Pay through traceable channels and always collect a receipt. Cash-only deals with no documentation are a major red flag.

Red Flags to Watch For

Too-Cheap Prices

Prices dramatically below market rate are bait. If it looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is.

Pressure to Pay Fast

"Someone else is coming today" is a classic trick to stop you from thinking or verifying anything.

No Verifiable Identity

An agent who refuses to share ID, an office address, or a RentHub verified profile should not be trusted.

Odd Payment Channels

Requests for gift cards, crypto, or transfers to a third party's personal account are strong scam indicators.

Report a Scam

If you encounter a suspicious listing or agent, contact us immediately at info@renthub.cc or call +234 707 774 1842. Include the listing link, agent name, and any screenshots. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours, and confirmed scammers are removed and reported to the relevant authorities.
